Where Fiction Meets Reality: A Review of The Golden Thread by Catherine J. Craig Posted: Wednesday, November 09, 2011

Author Catherine J. Craig brilliantly weaves fiction into the truths revealed in the Holy Bible.

She leads her readers on a journey through history and brings to life the characters many students of the Bible take for granted without giving a lot of thought to who they might have been as people. What were their likes and dislikes? How did they interact with one another in times of peace as well as times of opposition? Her imagination works within the parameters of Scripture, which makes for an interesting read. Explore the early days of the first families, the first deceit, the first heartbreak, and the first victory!

I found myself in tears as I read the conversation between Leah and Rachel, after their father Laban insisted on deceiving Jacob. These women became relatable, and new life was breathed into the familiar accounts in the Bible.

It was especially engaging when David, before he was king, would sit with his grandmother and listen to her share the stories of time past. I would get so caught up in the story, I was knocked back into the "now" when she was interrupted by another question, or some else who was in the room with them.

So it went from story to story, from Genesis through the birth of Christ. I'm convinced this book would be enjoyable to any reader; Christian or not; new to the Bible, or an avid student. You will find yourself laughing and crying at times, as well as loving or loathing the characters. You may even see yourself in many of these people, and come to understand in a deeper way that many of these saints of old had their flaws just as we do, and yet God used them in the midst of teaching them. I found this to be a comfort and encouragement for my own life.

As an added bonus, this book concludes with a study which combines the biblical reference to the stories in each chapter to help further our understanding.

What I appreciated most, is that I was not left to wonder which part of the story is fact and which is fiction, as there are footnotes along the way.

Catherine's daughter said, "Mom, I wish someone would write a book that makes the Bible come alive!" In my opinion, this author did just that! I invite you to experience another time and place - read The Golden Thread, you'll be glad you did.

The Golden Thread
Catherine J. Craig

The story of the Bible is a unique one but may read a little dry sometimes. "The Golden Thread" is Catherine J. Craig creating a novelization of biblical stories of the New Testament. Presenting the tale in a riveting format and in a way that anyone who enjoys novels can read, Catherine J. Craig brings these biblical tales to life. "The Golden Thread" is a fine addition to any historical or biblical novel collection.
